It's been a frustrating start to the season. While the winter training has clearly paid off for most, results haven't quite followed in what have been some tough races.
Winter Warrior crit league
These races which have been set up Lancaster University cycle club are a great start to the season. At just under an hour long they're always full gas and attract some fast elite racers looking for early points. It was great to find ourselves well in the mix in the last two races of the series but disappointing to not pick up any points. Robin had more luck in the 4th category races, picking up a 3rd and a 4th place. "Coming from a background of racing of mountain bikes, I had no issues transitioning into road racing."
Varsity 10mile Time Trial
Time trials are the ultimate test of fitness and provide a great benchmark for improvement during the season. We got MMU involved and our sponsor Bike Doctor kindly provided some great prizes for a varsity competition. We couldn't have asked for better conditions on the day with a rare warm sunny day in March. There were some great performances with our top guys setting PB's and some great first attempts for others.
Duncan Sparrow 2/3/4
We had high hopes for this 50 mile race as it was the first one we'd be doing with no elite riders. Only three of the team ended up racing. Tarn tried to go with many of the early breaks but ultimately all three of us missed out on the winning move comprising of riders from many different teams. This made for a frustrating race as nobody wanted to contribute to bridging the gap. Gareth tried to go with some counter moves which came to nothing. Coming into the final 8 miles Tarn upped the pace to stabilize the gap at around 2 minutes. Will had managed to stay fairly sheltered for much of the race so we decided to try and lead him out. Unfortunately we found ourselves on the front about 2 miles from the finish and left Will on the front with too far to sprint, he rolled in in 11th place in the bunch 1min 50 behind the breakaway. It was frustrating to not finish in the points but the mindset seems right within the team and with the training camp just around corner we'll be firing on all cylinders come the BUCS road race in May.
